The Bulls Head
Pub & Local History

The original Bulls Head Inn was the old cottage to the right of the Church Lychgate, now called The Old Post Office. The present building was built as The Bulls Head Hotel in 1908. The date can be seen on the rainwater hopper heads on the front of the building. It is said to have been speculatively built as a 'Railway Hotel' in anticipation of the railway coming through Ewhurst. This may seem odd today, but around the turn of the century several different proposals were made for a line from Dorking to Midhurst, but the plans fell through owing to the opposition of landowners in the Dorking area.

However, had the railway actually been built it would not have come through the top of the village. It would have crossed the main road near Williams Place and then continued along the backs of the houses in Cranleigh Road, although most of these were not built at this time. Kelly's Directory for 1909 lists the landlord as Thomas Menell.

After the First World War the ‘Pals Club’ met there and during the Second World War it was used by the Home Guard.

The green, opposite, is part of the Village Conservation Area and is surrounded by many attractive old houses. Old Cottage dates from the early 17th century. In the late 17th century it was the home of Edward Badcock and continued to be known as 'Badcocks' until well into the 19th century. Crown Cottage and Little Crown take their name from the Crown Inn, a former ale house which closed in 1960 and was converted into two cottages.

The wall on the south side of Ivy Cottage is a particularly good example of the decorative practice of galleting, where small ironstone chips are embedded into the mortar. This is commonly said to ward off witches. Wyndrums is of great interest to architectural historians and has been dated by dendrochronology [tree ring dating] to 1571. In the 19th century and early 20th century Deblins Green was Ede's Stores. To the rear, Old Farm has close studded timber framing. Corner House was formerly two cottages. The oldest part dates from around 1600. Also on the green is the Village Sign erected to commemorate the Queens coronation in 1954.
